In 1929, October 4 was established as World Animal Day. The date coincides with the feast of San Francois of Seated and the relation is not random but has been taken into account by the World Organization for the Protection of Animalsl who imposed this day in order to raise awareness about conservation animal.
For many years, more and more animals are critically endangered extinction. It is an irreversible process that can be caused by various variables related to human activity and natural causes. In recent years, the detrimental impact of humans on wildlife has increased exponentially and the causes that threaten species conservation have multiplied.
These reasons may be due to indiscriminate hunting and fishing of certain species for sporting, commercial or recreational purposes. Also due to the alteration of the environment, such as deforestation, overgrazing, agrarian expansion, pollution, among others. On the other hand, it can be caused by climatic reasons, such as global warming which alters weather conditions, or the introduction of exotic species for commercial and sporting purposes, which generates competition for food or between native species.
In the world there are more than a million animals in danger of extinction, and currently in Argentina there are about 500 endangered species. Among them, the native animals most at risk of turn off in the countryside, they are the huemul, the jaguar, the maned guazú, the Andean condor, the southern right whale and the capuchin monkey.
There is another national date to raise awareness of the Animal protection, It is April 29 in commemoration of the death of Ignacio Lucas Albarracín. He was a lawyer who fought for animal rights and became president of the Society Argentina Protective of The Animals for over 50 years. The purpose of this day is to reflect on the protection, the mistreatment and exploitation of these beings.
The relationship between Saint Francis of Assisi and the animals
The saint was born in Seated, Italy, in the 13th century and founded the Franciscan order, and the female order of Poor Clares, created by Saint Clare of Assisi. San FrancoisHe was the son of a very wealthy merchant who, for God’s sake, renounced his inheritance and material possessions. For this action, and the way to spend his life, he is characterized by his vow of poverty, humility and devotion to the poorest. He was one of the most influential saints in Catholicism, being the inspiration for Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
Another great quality he had was his concern for the environment, especially for the animals. He considered them to be part of God’s creation, and we must Protect them promote its conservation. For a long time, on the day of his liturgical celebration, hundreds of the faithful came to the churches for the parish priest to bless their pets. This custom has spread over the years to different cultures, and today it is already a worldwide celebration that transcends any type of religion and culture. For this reason, 92 years ago it became a world trip. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared him patron of the animals.
