With 99% of the votes counted, a second round has been confirmed between Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori in Peru

The minutes count at 99.024% of the general elections held this Sunday in Peru confirms that the second round of the Peruvian presidency will be contested by the far left candidate Pedro Castillo and the authoritarian right Keiko Fujimori.

The latest data published on Wednesday by the National Office for Electoral Processes (ONPE) indicate a Slight rise of Castillo, since he obtains 19,083% of the votes, while Fujimori consolidates in second position, with 13.373%.

In addition, the far right Rafael Lopez was in third position, with 11.682%, and moved the economist to fourth place Hernando de Soto, which garnered 11.597% of the vote.

These candidates are followed by leftist center Yonhy Lescano, leftist Verónika Mendoza, businessman César Acuña and former minister Daniel Urresti.

Having advanced at a good pace, we consider that the counting of the votes still pending will be slower because the problems must be resolved in the minutes, as well as those which have been observed or contested by the legal representatives of the parties.

In this regard, the president of the National Election Jury (JNE), Jorge Luis Salas, I affirm that Priority will be given to the resolution of the observed minutes referring to the candidatures which go to the second round, which will be held on June 6.

“We must give priority to the situation of the presidential formulas to resolve this uncertainty, which interests the country.“Salas remarked on the state network Peru TV.

For its part, Pedro Castillo He called on social groups and national organizations to start a dialogue, for which he asked them “not to panic” and to sit “to talk”.

“Let’s talk about the proposals, let’s talk about what we need. I keep saying Peru needs structural change so as not to continue to polarize the country, ”declared the candidate from the northern region of Cajamarca, where he resides.

The representative of the Peru Free party assured that after the results of the elections, he feels “calm” and that during his campaign for the second round there will be “no aggression” on his part.

“But I see a political scenario in a second round that it is a competition between the rich and the poor, between the opulence and the beggar Lazarus, and I also see a struggle between the boss and the worker, between the master and the slave. », He underlined.

The winner of the vote between Castillo and Fujimori will assume the new government for the period 2021-2026 on July 28, day of the bicentenary of the independence of Peru, while a day before the new Congress will do so.
