Among the invited countries are the powers that make up the G7 with the United States (Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) as well as five Latin American countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico.

In his letter from Washington, Biden also sent a “cordial greeting” to the head of state and the people of Argentina “as we continue our common struggle to turn the tide of suffering and loss inflicted by this pandemic.” My thoughts are with all the Argentinian families and communities who have been affected by the tragedies of this crisis.“.

President Biden’s goal is the summit mark America’s return to the forefront of the fight against climate change, after the Donald Trump administration abandoned the Paris Agreement. This agreement aims to limit global warming to 2 ° C above pre-industrial levels and to continue efforts to lower it to 1.5 ° C.

“If we do not dramatically increase our efforts during this decade, we will condemn future generations to untold harm,” he said in the letter. In this sense, the American president announced that the United States would present an “ambitious” climate objective for 2030.

As well He urged Alberto Fernández to “attend the summit ready to share how his government will help keep the 1.5 degree Celsius target within reach”.

In fact, Biden has already made a public commitment to zero emissions from the U.S. energy sector by 2035 and carbon neutrality in the nation’s economy by 2050.

The White House stressed that a key objective of the climate summit and COP26 will be to catalyze efforts so that the goal of reducing global warming to 1.5 ° C is achievable.

“I am fully committed to working with you (Alberto Fernández) to strengthen the global climate ambition ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in Glasgow in November.”said the letter.

And, regarding the dynamics of the summit, he concludes: “Our discussions will focus both on the challenge of decarbonizing the global economy and on the pressing need to help vulnerable countries adapt to inevitable climate impacts.
