Woman who suffocated and killed her three children has been declared indisputable for insanity the Chronicle

A 44-year-old Irish nurse was declared innocent by being irreproachable for madness, after having been accused of suffocating his three children at his home in January of last year. The children’s bodies were found by their father Andrew McGinley.

Deirdre Morley, 44, was charged with murdering her children by suffocation Conor, nine and Darragh, seven, and her three-year-old daughter, Carla at his home, Parson’s Court, Newcastle, Co Dublin, as detailed by UK media The sun.

Morley admitted to suffocating his children, but he pleaded not guilty to insanity, an opinion supported by two consultant psychiatrists, one from the defense and the other from the prosecution, after four hours and 23 minutes of deliberation.

Justice ordered Morley to stay preventive detention in the central psychiatric hospital until the end of May. In turn, Judge Paul Coffey thanked the jurors for their work on what he called a “heartbreaking affair”.

The court heard that once a person is established as having a mental disorder, there are three possible reasons for such a verdict: that the person did not know what they were doing; that they didn’t know what they were doing was wrong; or they could not refrain from the act.

Defense witness Dr Brenda Wright testified that the defendant had bipolar affective disorder type 2 that Morley met two of the criteria: that he did not know that what he was doing was wrong and that he could not refrain from doing the act.

For its part, the prosecution had called in its own expert, Dr Mary Davoren, who independently supported Dr Wright’s statements.

“Doctors are unanimous in saying that the defendant was legally insane when she killed her three children.”they said of the court.
