Like every May 1st, we celebrate today the
International Labor Day
in tribute to
The martyrs of Chicago, who, in 1886, played
a series of demonstrations in the United States. He stated mainly that the working day was limited to 8 hours, in a context in which he worked between 14 and 16 years.
The young anarchist Albert Spies was the leader of the event. At a workers' convention in Baltimore, he called for a general strike. About 350,000 workers have joined this claim across the United States.
The mobilizations stretched from May 1 to May 4, during the Haymarket revolt, during which police and demonstrators died. One of the milestones of this violent episode was the explosion of a bomb, which killed a man in uniform. Spies and half a dozen of his companions were sentenced to death by hanging "for inciting the killing of an official".
Because of these events, at the Congress of the International Workers 'Association held in Paris in 1889, May Day was declared International Workers' Day. Whatever the case may be, although the whole world is celebrated on this date, the United States – the protagonist of the revolt – is doing it on the first Monday of September.
Google
decided to join this tribute and dedicated a doodle to wish a good day of work to users of the search engine.
