It all started with an order from the then president, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, to the French agronomist Michel Aimé Pouget in 1853. The specialist was to introduce new varieties to Mendoza, spread their culture and thus contribute to the Improvement of the national wine industry. On April 17 of the same year, the project of creating a Quinta Normal and a school of agriculture of the region was presented, marking the beginning of the first incursions in the culture of this type of grape.
Originally from Bordeaux in France, Malbec did not run with the same fate as in our country: periods of frost and incessant plagues swept the crop, while it became locally the flagship of Argentine wines (and preferred by many palace). At present, it is the most cultivated variety, placing us on the podium of world production. Out of a total of 43,000 hectares planted, grape exports accounted for 29% of total exports in liters and 49% of the total wine billed.
A report from the National Institute of Viticulture indicates that wine consumption per capita in Argentina was 18.9 liters per year in 2018. In addition, it places Malbec among the leading wines marketed in the country, which concentrates 38% of the total varieties, followed by the importance of Cabernet Sauvignon with 13%.
The celebrations in our country are mainly held in Mendoza, but they also take place in Buenos Aires and several Argentine cities.
