World War II bomb explosion caused severe damage in UK city of Exeter

A controlled detonation of a WWII one-ton bomb caused extensive property damage in the British city of Exeter on Saturday.

Hundreds of evacuated residents could be left without returning home over the next few hours, given the impact of the shock wave on several homes in the city.

The detonation shattered glass and bricks within a radius of 100 meters, produced a crater the size of a bus and threw debris 250 meters. After the explosion, a huge cloud of gray dust was seen in the sky.

Now, experts are investigating the concrete damage the explosion caused to surrounding homes, while residents were forced to spend the night with relatives.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that structural assessments are carried out as quickly as possible and residents can return home this afternoon,” a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said.

The discovery of bombs during the war is an occasional phenomenon in the United Kingdom, the target of German bombing raids during the war.
