WTO urges UK to donate surplus vaccines

The new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called on the UK to start distributing vaccines to the poorest countries in order to stabilize the rate of global dose distribution.

“I don’t think you should expect a surplus when there are already people who have it. I think if they want to donate, they should do it now, because equal access for poor countries benefit rich countries, ”Iweala told the BBC.

The UK is the country in Europe that has made the most progress in its society’s vaccination process and even hopes to have vaccinated everyone over 50 by May.

“The nature of the pandemic and the mutation of many variants mean that no country can feel safe until all countries have taken precautions to vaccinate their population,” added the director of the organization.

It is because experts point out the complications that the appearance of new variants of the COVID-19 virus could cause if most countries in the world do not advance in a vaccination process.

Boris Johnson said in the last hours that he would wait for the vaccination of his population before giving doses.
