A senior Arizona Republican rebutted President Donald Trump’s baseless attempts to overturn the election results in that country in a no-nonsense statement on Friday, while joining other Republicans in calling for a electoral audit of its largest county.
Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, a Republican, said in a statement that it was highly unlikely under state law that that country’s legislature could appoint its own voters to pass the state electoral college votes to Trump. The president’s legal team, which includes former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, claimed in his dazzling legal fight that widespread voter fraud in Arizona and other states was the reason Trump had lost the elections.
Bowers, however, put an end to these claims.
“Our state’s survey was completed on Monday, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris received the most votes, so these are the candidates for which the state’s presidential voters must vote,” he said in the communicated. “Nothing in the US Constitution or in the decisions of the US Supreme Court even suggests that the Arizona Legislature can retroactively nominate different voters who would vote for 2 different candidates.”
“As a conservative Republican, I don’t like the results of the presidential election,” he said. “I voted for President Trump and worked hard to re-elect him. But I cannot and will not accept the idea that we are breaking current law to change the outcome of a certified election.
It comes weeks before the Electoral College votes to officially vote for President and Vice President, and after the Head of General Service Administration informed President-elect Joe Biden that the formal government transition process had been approved.
It also comes after Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican and close Trump ally, found himself in the president’s sights on Monday when he signed the state’s electoral certification. Trump tweeted that Ducey had “betrayed” the people of Arizona by not supporting the president’s false claim that he actually won the state he lost by more than 10,000 votes.
Video footage of Ducey signing the certification shows his phone ringing to the beat of “Hail to the Chief” during the ceremony – the ringtone he said he uses to make sure he doesn’t miss calls from the White House. Ducey cut the call.
Several other battlefield states – including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia – also certified their results and officially declared Biden the winner. Trump’s legal team has been ridiculed and excoriated for its fraud allegations without offering strong evidence.
However, in a tweet friday nightTrump clung to another statement from Bowers, Arizona Senate Speaker Karen Fann, also a Republican, and other senior GOP officials, who called for a forensic audit of Maricopa County , the most populous area of the state.
Trump said the audit “will easily give us the state.” But, in the statement, officials said the audit, which was not launched, would explain the irregularities and provide transparency to state voters.
