Officials are investigating a Texas Army chaplain after suggesting in a social media post that transgender soldiers were “mentally unfit” and “unqualified to serve.”
Major Andrew Calvert made the comments on a military newspaper’s Facebook page on Monday, the same day President Joe Biden signed an executive order lifting the ban on transgender people openly serving in the military, officials said. He is the chaplain of the 3rd Security Assistance Brigade at Fort Hood.
“How does rejection of reality (biology) not prove that a person is mentally unfit (sick) and thus render that person unqualified to serve?” There is little difference in this from those who believe and advocate for a ‘flat earth’, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, ”Calvert wrote in the post on the Army Times Facebook page, according to Catches screen.
“The motivation is different, but the argument is the same. This person is a MedBoard for the mental well-being that awaits. What a waste of military resources and funding! “
The Army Security Assistance Command reminded its soldiers of its “Think, Type, Post” social media policy in a online declaration Tuesday.
“We are aware of recent comments posted on the Army Times Facebook regarding the lifting of the ban on transgender servicemen. This incident is under investigation,” officials said in the statement.
Biden’s order on Monday overturned a ban that former President Donald Trump had enforced. The new directive “immediately prohibits involuntary separations, dismissals and refusals to re-enroll or continue in service” on the basis of gender identity, according to the White House.
The order also ordered an immediate “correction” of military records for those affected by Trump’s ban.
