Arrest made in connection with the hit and run death of Robert Maraj, father of Nicki Minaj

New York police say they arrested the driver who allegedly hit and killed Robert Maraj, the father of rapper Nicki Minaj, last week in Long Island.

Retail Nassau County Police Department. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said Wednesday Charles Polevich, 70, was arrested after surrendering.

Polevich faces charges for leaving the scene of a fatal car crash and for taking steps to hide or disguise his distinctive 1992 white Volvo station wagon from authorities, Fitzpatrick said, adding that police had followed him. before and after the accident using safety sequences.

“We followed him to his house,” Fitzpatrick said.

Polevich owns a home in Mineola, New York, on Long Island, but resides in Guam, the U.S. territory in the western Pacific, Fitzpatrick said.

Representatives for Nicki Minaj did not immediately respond to an NBC News request for comment.

Polevich did not immediately respond to an email from NBC News requesting comment.

The collision took place at around 6:15 p.m. ET on Friday, as snow blanketed the streets of Mineola.

Maraj, 64, was walking on the pavement when he was struck by Polevich, who was traveling in the same direction, Fitzpatrick said.

“Mr. Povelich stopped at that point, but then fled after seeing that he had injured that person,” Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick added that Polevich probably would not have faced charges had he not fled the scene.

According to public records, Polevich is the president of Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting, Inc., in Guam.
