A woman was arrested Tuesday in connection with the case of a black teenager who went missing in Louisiana last year and was found dead four days after being reported missing, a sheriff said.

Janet Irvin, 37, was arrested on one count of failing to report a missing child and contributing to juvenile delinquency, Iberia Parish Sheriff Tommy Romero said.

It was not immediately clear on Tuesday night what role authorities believe she played and whether she had a lawyer who could speak for her.

Quawan “Bobby” Charles, 15, was reported missing by police in Baldwin in St. Mary’s Parish on October 30, authorities said. Four days later, his body was found in a sugar cane field in the parish of Iberia, near the village of Loreauville.

“I am confident that my office has put together an extremely strong case against Ms. Irvin,” Romero said in a video statement. He added that after Irvin’s arrest he spoke personally with the teenager’s family.

“I hope this arrest will start to help their family heal. And this case is by no means closed,” Romero said.

Relatives of Charles and others have called for an independent investigation, raised questions that his race played a role in the police response, and asked if Baldwin’s police had exhausted all of their resources for the search.

The parish of Iberia is adjacent to the parish of St. Mary, where Baldwin is located. Romero said on Tuesday that the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office was not notified of a missing minor in his ward until his mother informed them on November 3, the same day the body would be found.
