The green knight opens in theaters this weekend, bringing a new take on the Arthurian legend to the big screen. Everyone agrees that the film is fantastic, which means it might inspire you to research other Arthurian films. And that’s where this list comes in. The sword in the stoneThe 1963 Disney animated version of King Arthur’s childhood is set to become a live-action reboot, because that’s what Disney is doing these days. I don’t know what reputation this Disney classic has these days – does anyone care like they care about other Disney movies from this bygone era? Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that this is the only Arthurian movie where Merlin goes on vacation to Bermuda.

Camelot
Camelot, the 1967 film based on the 1960 musical of the same name, takes the Arthurian legend and sets it to music, with Richard Harris singing tunes as his kingdom crumbles around him. The live musical was one of John F. Kennedy’s favorites, but, of course, he never got to see the movie for… obvious reasons. Talk about a disappointment, right?

King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword
Guy ritchie‘s King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword was supposed to launch a whole cinematic universe, because that’s what studios want these days. But the film failed and all the sequels failed. I’m not going to sit here and say this is a misunderstood classic – that’s damn stupid. But it has its own wacky charms, even though it barely resembles the familiar Arthurian legend. I guess they were saving this for these sequels.

Antoine Fuqua‘s 2004 king arthur tried to cash the Pirates of the Caribbean hype. Both films were produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and both starred Keira Knightly. But at the same time Pirates was a fun and captivating adventure, king arthur is a brooding, gloomy film that attempts to create a “realistic” version of Arthur’s story. While I can’t rate this movie as a good one, it’s worth checking out to see the appearances of Clive owen, Mads Mikkelsen, Joel edgerton, and more.

First knight
I have a feeling most people have forgotten that 1995 movie where Sean connery plays an older King Arthur and Richard Gere is completely misplaced as Lancelot. But you know what? First knight is not bad at all. I like the angle the film takes, where Arthur’s marriage to Guinevere (Julia ormond) is out of necessity, not love, thus setting the stage for the Guinevere / Lancelot romance.

Riders
Riders is not exactly a King Arthur story. Instead, it’s the story of a biker gang who like to live by Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table code. And oh yeah it was made by George A. Romero and stars Ed harris and Tom savini. How can we not be interested in it at least a little?

The child who would be king
Joe cornish, a filmmaker who should really work more, barred The child who would be king, a charming fantasy about modern day children who become the new Knights of the Round Table. It’s sweet and entertaining, and the kind of family adventure we could use more of these days. More: Rebecca Ferguson appears as the villain.

Army of Darkness
Army of Darkness, the third entry in the evil Dead series, send Bruce campbell‘s Ash goes back in time to fight an army of skeletons armed with swords. And although it is not technically a King Arthur story, there is a Lord Arthur character, so that’s all the excuse I needed to include the movie on this list. Pretend it’s King Arthur and it works.

King fisherman
Terry gilliamit’s sad, beautiful curiosity King fisherman stars Robin williams as a homeless man with a mental illness who believes he is in search of the holy grail of the Fisher King, a character in Arthurian legend. Jeff Bridges is the former shock-jock who befriends Williams. It’s one of Gilliam’s best movies, with a gorgeous scene where everyone in a crowded Grand Central station suddenly stops what they’re doing to tango with each other.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I mean, obviously – how could this list not understand Monty Python and the Holy Grail? A shamelessly silly movie (and the best of Python movies), Holy Grail features killer bunnies, impromptu musical numbers, sudden outbursts of graphic violence and much more.

Excalibur
The best Arthurian film remains Excalibur, John boormanis a big, daring and exciting version of the story of Arthur and all of his friends and foes. Full of visuals that seem straight out of a drug-induced dream, and with a booming musical score, you just can’t beat this movie, so don’t even try.
