GOP state representative John Becker of Clermont County led a group that included fellow Republican state officials. Nino Vitale, Candice Keller and Paul Zeltwanger by filing 12 articles of indictment against DeWine, calling it “an effort to restore the rule of law”.
The allegations claim that the DeWine administration implemented unconstitutional orders in response to the pandemic.
In a statement shared with local news outlets, Becker’s office criticized DeWine, alleging “mismanagement, mischief, mischief, abuse of power and other crimes include, but not limited to, l ‘interference in the conduct of a presidential primary election, arbitrary closing and imposing curfews on certain businesses, while allowing other businesses to remain open. “
The state’s Republican lawmaker group claims DeWine violated the civil liberties of Ohio residents by issuing a stay-at-home order and forcing them to wear masks. They argued that the face-masking rule “promotes fear, turns neighbors against neighbors and contracts the economy by making people fear leaving their homes.”
Lawmakers first threatened articles of impeachment in August, announcing they were being drafted.
A majority of the Ohio House of Representatives is expected to approve the resolution, and then two-thirds of the Ohio Senate is expected to vote to condemn the governor.
In August, when Becker and others suggested 10 items, DeWine brushed off the effort.
“As governor, my priorities are to keep people safe and move our economy forward faster,” DeWine said at the time. “If there are others in the Legislature who want to spend their time drafting resolutions and tabling clauses … I would just say, ‘Go ahead. “”
