An artist was killed on stage during a performance at Moscow’s famous Bolshoi Theater, the hall announced on Saturday (October 9).

The 37-year-old was killed during a performance of Sadko, a 19th century opera by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The identity of the man has not been revealed.

In comments relayed to the Interfax news agency, the Bolshoi press service declared that “the opera was immediately stopped and the public was asked to leave”, following an accident on the set.

The artist died before an ambulance could arrive.

Moscow investigators are said to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

The Interfax report claimed that a source said the artist was killed by a ramp during a change of scenery.

Other news agencies reported that he was crushed by a piece of scenery falling from the set.

The Bolshoi Theater, one of the most famous ballets and operas in the world, has already been the scene of tragedies.

In 2013, senior violinist Viktor Sedov, who had worked at the Bolshoi for almost four decades, died after falling into the orchestra pit.
