Arturia updates MicroFreak with three new oscillators

Although all three have their specialties, they are also quite versatile. You can get thunderous bass from the Harm voice and scintillating tracks from the bass. The SawX is a fan of wires and pads. New presets highlighting the added oscillator types cover everything from drums and crazy risers to broken sonic keys. The new sounds definitely fit into the digital nature of the MicroFreak, but that’s certainly not a bad thing. If you’re into industrial, techno, or hyper-pop, there’s a ton to like here.

With all the new sounds and soundtracks released over the past couple of years (including the must-download Nostalgia and Reminiscence from Oscillator Sink), the MicroFreak is starting to feel a bit claustrophobic, so Arturia has made the number of locations go up. Presets from 256 to 384, giving you more space to save your favorites with your own creations. The latest firmware will also restore the most recently used preset when you turn it on, which might seem like a minor change, but welcome if you’re obsessed with something saved in slot 240.

Finally, firmware v3 includes a four voice unison mode with up to 12 semitone propagation that can also be a modulation destination.

I spent about 15 minutes playing with the new firmware which is now available for free download. Listen to a short demo below – all sounds are from the three new MicroFreak oscillators except the drums which are from Model: Cycles by Elektron.
