In just over 24 hours this weekend, 24 people were shot in Chicago, including three children under 13 – and three of the adults shot dead as a result of their injuries, police said.

Police in Chicago were investigating murder cases involving six homicides and six people in front of a West Englewood noon shower, in which an 8-year-old boy had been shot in the chest. and back and a 10-year-old girl was hit in the shin.

Three people were also shot at East Garfield Park around 3:30 am Sunday while they were outside, in the 3900 block of West Wilcox Street. A 34-year-old man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound in his right leg. a 26-year-old man was taken to the American Norwegian hospital with a gunshot wound to his right foot; and a 33-year-old man was taken to the Rush University Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his left arm.

Two of the three homicide investigations opened on Sunday morning, police said. At approximately 8:30 am, officers were called in 6700 block of South Normal Boulevard in Englewood and found a 52-year-old man shot in the head. He was declared dead on the scene, officials said.

Constable Michael Carroll stated that shooting may have been the result of family conflict; a person of interest was in custody, he said.

At approximately 6:10 am, Woodlawn officers were summoned to a shootout in the 6600 block of South Maryland Avenue. A 32-year-old man was shot several times in the back, police said. He was taken to the Medical Center of the University of Chicago, where he was later declared dead. No arrests were made in this case.

A teenager was also shot Saturday afternoon at around 4 pm in the 1700 block of West Steuben Street in Morgan Park, in an incident that also injured a 22-year-old man. The medical examiner's office later identified the man killed as 19-year-old Demonte Davis.

Todd Kluber, a meteorologist with the National Meteorological Service, said Sunday's peak temperature is expected to reach 66 degrees, the same temperature recorded on Saturday, making 2019 the hottest day ever.

"It is safe to say that this weekend has been the hottest of the year," Kluber said.

Chicago police generally see an increase in violence in the summer, partly because of the winter cold that keeps more people inside. There are also more and more social gatherings in the summer, which means that people have more opportunity to drink alcohol, which can give rise to additional arguments.

Police were investigating statistics to determine whether the number of shootings between Saturday and Sunday morning was a significant increase in violence over previous weekends. These numbers are usually compiled on Monday.
