OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Athletics' Mike Fiers kicked off his second coxless game by eliminating the Cincinnati Reds with the help of two spectacular defenses in Tuesday night's 2-0 win.
Proud (3-3) continued its 2015 gem against the Dodgers with a masterpiece of 131 pitches to become the 35th pitcher with several non-hitters of his career. He walked two and pulled out six, ending by stirring Eugenio Suarez with a big curved ball.
The A came out of the canoe to the crowd Proud feast after the final in front of a few thousand remaining spectators. The match began more than an hour and a half later due to a slight malfunction at the Coliseum. Proud handed his hat to the crowd and raised his arms in triumph as he walked away.
This is the first time the A have an absence of hitters in consecutive seasons, following Sean Manaea's no-no last season against the Boston Red Sox.
This one did not come without moments of tension while Fiers was knocked down by two excellent defensive games back to back in the sixth inning. Second baseman Jurickson Profar made a diving pass to Kyle Farmer in the straight court for the second out, which prompted Proud to raise his arms in joy.
Joey Votto followed with a shot in the middle of the field, but Ramon Laureano jumped out of the gate to remove the ball and deprive the Reds star of a home run.
With the draw of Fiers, five throwers on the lists of the MLB have several non-striking career players: Justin Verlander, Jake Arrieta, Scherzer Max, Homer Bailey and Fiers.
Proud is the eighth pitcher in the history of the MLB to launch a defenseless draw, joining Nolan Ryan (3 teams), Cy Young (2), Randy Johnson (2), Adonis Terry (2), Jim Bunning (2), Ted Breitenstein (2) and Hideo Nomo (2).
