Get ready for the first Verzuz battle of 2021: Ashanti vs. Keyshia Cole, which has been postponed until tonight from its originally scheduled date in mid-December.

Who knew that when the series of battles was designed out of pandemic boredom in early 2020, it would continue into the New Year? And who expected it to go from virtual to in person and back again? But here we are.

“Are you ready ???” Ashanti tweeted Thursday, promoting the Battle of the Night and almost tagging the just forgiven rapper Lil Wayne in her post (she had left by letter).

Meanwhile, “I Should Have Cheated” singer Cole, 39, has been teasing her upcoming eighth album – and promoting the Battle of Verzuz – for weeks. on social networks.

People can watch today’s battle live from 5 p.m. PT on the Verzuz TV Instagram page and on Apple Music. And remember – much of the show happens in the IG commentary as fans weigh in on who they think wins the friendly competition.

The Ashanti-Keyshia Cole event was postponed from December 12 after the ‘dumb’ artist Ashanti tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“I’m fine and have no pain,” the 40-year-old wrote on Instagram at the time. “Actually, I’m ready to do the verzuz from home … we’re trying to figure it all out !!!” But the battle has been postponed and the singer – along with her mother and father, who also caught the virus – were declared COVID-19-free earlier this year.

About a week later, the surge in COVID-19 cases sparked a return to a virtual battle (just as TV, film and commercial productions in LA took a hiatus).

“As much as we like having everyone together in the same room, to protect the artists and everyone who works with us to put on the shows, we’ll be going back to different places a bit. We are excited for the next events and look forward to returning to the show in the coming weeks, ”Verzuz said on January 8 on social media.

The Battles, which feature hip-hop and R&B musicians, are the brainchild of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland.

“Legit must have told someone I couldn’t go on a date tomorrow because I have to see Keyshia Cole on @verzuzonline,” wrote a Twitter user which was retweeted by Beatz on Wednesday while promoting the upcoming contest. “He wanted to watch it with me and I’m like no, you’ll just be a distraction.”

Apple Music, which is now affiliated with Verzuz, has a Keyshia Cole-Ashanti “cheat sheat” playlist featuring the hits of the two women. On the list: “Feel So Good” and “Breakup 2 Makeup” by Ashanti and “Love” and “I Changed My Mind” by Cole.
