Ashton Kutcher had a ticket aboard the Virgin Galactic spaceship, but the actor revealed that he ultimately wouldn’t make the trip. In an interview with Cheddar this week, Kutcher said his wife, Mila Kunis, had dissuaded him.
“When I got married and had kids, my wife told me it wasn’t a smart family decision to go to space when we have young children,” Kutcher said.
The actors, who starred side by side in “That 70’s Show”, have two children – Wyatt, 6, and Dimitri, 4. But Kutcher bought his ticket even before he and Kunis tied the knot in 2015.
In 2012, the actor became the 500th customer to register for the Virgin Galactic space flight. Kutcher told Cheddar on Wednesday that he resold his ticket to the company.
Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Galactic performed a test flight in space Sunday. Branson and five crew members reached an altitude of just over 50 miles, to demonstrate that his company’s air-launched space plane is ready for passengers.
The company is planning two more test flights and hopes to start launching paying customers in early 2022. Tickets will be $ 250,000 or more per seat, according to company officials.
While Kutcher may have given up on his Virgin Galactic ticket, space travel could be in the 43-year-old’s future. “I won’t be on the next flight, but at some point I’m going to space,” Kutcher told Cheddar.
Several other celebrities have sworn to be the first commercial travelers to space. Leonardio DiCaprio is also planning to take a Virgin Galactic space flight – and a chance to accompany him was at auction during the Cannes film festival in 2013.
Branson recently announced another raffle, this one benefiting Space for Humanity, an organization that sends civilian leaders into space “to help expand access to all of humanity.” Branson said two winners will be selected to join one of the first commercial flights.
