Asian Americans from Upper Arlington wrote a letter to Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted (right) on a Tweeter in which he called the coronavirus the “Wuhan virus”.
“Lieutenant Governor Husted, your choice of words has only aroused the anxiety and fear currently experienced by Asians and Asian Americans in Upper Arlington, ”read the letter signed by 69 members of the community, NBC4 reported.
Many say that the use of language such as “Wuhan Virus” or “China Virus” can contribute to hate crimes against the Asian-American community. Others argue that it is important to label the virus based on where it came from.
“It had nothing to do with race, ethnicity, violence or anything else. It had to do with science, it had to do with the Chinese government, it had to do with a virus, ”Husted said in response to the reaction to his tweet.
“It had nothing to do with race or ethnicity and frankly I’m a little angry with people who have tried to do it because I think it’s intentional too,” Husted added.
The letter to Husted pointed out that hate crimes and incidents against Asian Americans have increased since the coronavirus pandemic began last year.
“Mnone of us are concerned that verbal abuse to our children and their family members will soon escalate into physical abuse against them, and we are unable to protect them from it, ”the letter said.
“Let me just say that as the elected leader of the state of Ohio, Asian Americans have been great contributors and have sacrificed and made America a wonderful country,” he said. Husted said.
