Straight out of playing The Huntress in Birds of prey, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is back to kick ass and take names in new Netflix action feature Kate. The first trailer because the film presents Winstead as a determined assassin on a final revenge mission as time is running out.
After detonating a mission, assassin Kate fafalls into the hands of the Yakuza organization. Waking up only to find that she has been poisoned, the ruthless criminal agent has less than 24 hours to take revenge on his enemies. In the process, she forms an unexpected bond with the fearless daughter of one of her former victims. Woody Harrelson appears as Kate’s confidant and support system, along with Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, Miku Martineau and Jun Kunimura also plays in the quest for revenge.
Pipeline John wick with the fight scenes, adding a Crank-sque scenario, and with Winstead evoking Ripley’s behavior in Extraterrestrial, Netflix offers a potentially breathtaking action movie. Director Cédric Nicolas-Troyan applauds Winstead “visceral and extremely raw” action performances, as she has done all of her own stunts.
In an interview with Rolling stone, Nicolas-Troyan describes the action film as his “love letter” to Japan. While it seems a bit incongruous that a white woman would lead this “love letter” by lamenting the Japanese for most of the film, Nicolas-Troyan says that highlighting many cherished aspects of Japanese culture was extremely important to him.
“The film is stuffed with Japanese cultural references: Lawson convenience stores, vending machines, pop culture (with the classic Galactic wars TV show largely inspired by Star wars), anime manga culture (with Tokyo ghoul) and the music”, he explains. “All of the needle drops in the movie are there to celebrate Japanese female artists of all genres: metal, pop, ballad, hip-hop and just plain weird.”
Kate premieres on Netflix on September 10.
