The Astros scored the third goal Alex bregman on the list of 10 days injured due to right hamstring tendon, manager Dusty baker announced to journalists on Thursday (Twitter link via Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle). Bregman returns home to Houston to undergo an MRI and determine the severity of the injury. Left handed Cionel Perez was recalled from the Astros’ alternative training site to take Bregman’s place on the roster.

Injuries continue to increase at an alarming rate for the Astros, who learned this week that Yordan Alvarez will require end of season knee surgery. Houston also received only one departure from Justin verlander in 2020, closer Roberto Osuna looks down on potential Tommy John surgery (although he tries to rehabilitate first). Brad peacock and Jose urquidy, who are expected to be key members of the paddock and the rotation, respectively, haven’t pitched a pitch this year. Michael brantley, meanwhile, has been on IL for almost a week and was ruled out before that due to a quadriceps strain. George springer ran out of time due to wrist fatigue, but he’s playing through rather than switching to IL.

With Bregman out, the Stros will most likely pass third base to youngsters Abraham Toro. A well-regarded 23-year-old, Toro has yet to hit a lot in a Major League limited time, but he did clear the Double-A throw (.306 / .393 / .513 in 435 AP) and throw it away. Triple-A (. 424 / .506 / .606 in 79 AP) same in 2019.

Houston’s DH situation is a bit more precarious. Kyle tucker regularly occupies left field in the absence of Brantley. Alvarez is out for the season and Toro could see regular reps in third place at least for the immediate future. This will push one of the Myles Straw, Jack Mayfield or recruit Taylor jones in the range with regularity.
