Astros put Yuli Gurriel on casualty list

The Astros announced they placed the first baseman Yuli Gurriel on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 3, with stiff neck. Infielders Taylor jones and Jacob Wilson are up from Triple-A Sugar Land, while fellow infielder Robel garcia was excluded.

There is no indication that Gurriel is facing an extended absence, but he will miss at least next week. It’s a bit of a disappointing development for a Houston team that holds a four-game lead over Athletics in the AL West. Jones starts on first base tonight against the Twins.

Last September, the Astros re-signed Gurriel to a one-year, $ 7 million contract with an $ 8 million club option for 2022. It seemed like a curious move at the time, given that the veteran was coming out of a bad 2020 season, but the Astros were handsomely rewarded for their faith. Gurriel has rebounded to a fantastic .324 / .388 / .490 (145 wRC +) in 417 home plate appearances this season. Next year’s option now seems like a no-brainer to exercise, and the 37-year-old numbers will be a significant mid-order presence for Houston as they look to make a playoff run.
