The Houston Astros denied a reporter access to Justin Verlander after the team's 2-1 defeat against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.
At the request of the thrower, Anthony Fenech, writer of the Detroit Free Press, was not allowed to go to the media after the Verlander match, said to the Vice President of Communications of Astros, Gene Dias . Verlander refused to speak to journalists in the presence of Fenech.
Fenech was allowed to enter the Astros Pavilion when Verlander had finished speaking, about six minutes after the pavilion opened.
"Blocking a journalist who works is not professional, disappointing and intolerable," said Peter Bhatia, editor of Free Press. "We will protest in front of the MLB and the Astros."
Verlander had expressed his dissatisfaction with Fenech at least twice before Wednesday night. He declined to meet with reporters in Fenech 's presence on Tuesday, and Dias told the writer before Wednesday' s match that Verlander did not want him in his post – match session.
It was not clear at once why Verlander had chosen Fenech. Verlander defended the Tigers from 2005 to 2017, when he was transferred to Houston at the trading deadline. Fenech is the best Tigers writer for the Free Press since 2015.
The Tigers scored the biggest setback of the MLB in 15 seasons after being ranked among the over-435 outsiders. Verlander took the defeat after allowing two runs on two hits with 11 strikeouts in full match.
The Astros are again the big favorites on Thursday, listed under-500 at the Westgate Westgate SuperBook.
