ASUS ROG XG Mobile, an external graphics docking station for ROG Flow X13

Along with ASUS ‘announcement of its latest ROG Flow X13 13-inch gaming laptop, it also unveiled an interesting new external graphics dock to accompany this laptop. Dubbed the ROG XG Mobile GV301, the external graphics dock is designed to expand the capabilities of the ROG Flow X13, transforming it into a powerful and lightweight portable gaming platform. And while the graphics docks themselves aren’t new, this one stands out for its portability, with the dock being similar in size to a second laptop.

From a high level point of view, the graphics dock is aptly named. At its heart, of course, is a high-performance GPU, with ASUS leveraging NVIDIA’s new RTX 3070 and 3080 laptop adapters, both of which will be a significant step up from the GeForce GTX 1650 graphics adapter built into the Flow. X13. At the same time, the docking station can power the Flow X13 – thanks to its integrated 280W power supply – and offers several ports including HDMI and DisplayPort, a Gig Ethernet jack, 4 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports and a card reader. Integrated SD.

Notably, like some past efforts to provide graphics docks for thin and light laptops, ASUS opts for a proprietary connection rather than relying on Thunderbolt. The unnamed connector is divided into two segments, one carrying PCIe 3.0 x8 data while the other segment is a USB-C connector for carrying USB power and data. This greatly limits the compatibility of the docking station, but it provides twice the PCIe bandwidth than Thunderbolt 3 or 4 would otherwise.

As mentioned earlier, one of ASUS ‘design goals for the ROG XG Mobile is portability, so that it can be carried with the Flow X13 rather than serving as a relatively static docking station at home. To this end, the docking station is 29.6mm thick, with a 208mm x 155mm footprint, making it comparable in size to a second laptop. It also weighs similar (albeit a bit denser) to a 1 kg (2.2 lb) dish. Fittingly, ASUS provides a pouch with the Flow X13 for carrying both the laptop and XG Mobile, which simplifies this process.
