At least 21 people were shot dead and five people were killed on Saturday in a series of shootings in the Midland and Odessa regions of Texas, a city official from Odessa told Fox News.
A suspect, identified by local police as a white man in his thirties, was shot dead in an Odessa cinema, local police said.
"It has been confirmed that the active shooter was killed at Odessa's Cinergy.There is no active shooter at present.All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects", said the Midland Police Department on his Facebook page.
Devin Sanchez, a spokesman for Odessa, told Fox News that a Texas state soldier was among the victims and shot dead on Interstate 20.
Odessa Mayor David Turner told Fox News that a gunman opened fire in Odessa after a police chase. Earlier, the Midland Police Department had claimed to believe that there were two shooters in two separate vehicles. A suspect would drive a small golden or white Toyota truck, while the other suspect would be driving a van from the US Postal Service.
The Texas Department of Public Security (DPS) has urged the public to avoid the I-20 in Odessa, Midland and Big Spring. Residents of Midland and Odessa were also invited to stay indoors.
President Trump has been informed of the shooting and the White House is monitoring the situation, said White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham.
Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec tweeted that Attorney General William Barr was monitoring the situation.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott decried what he called a "senseless and cowardly attack."
"The State of Texas and the Department of Public Safety are working closely with local law enforcement to provide the necessary resources and bring justice to this heinous attack," Abbott said in a statement. "I thank the first responders who acted quickly and admirably under pressure, and I want to remind all the Texans that we will not let the Lone Star State be invaded by hatred and violence." Odessa is about 20 miles southwest of Midland. Both cities are more than 300 miles west of Dallas.
