WABC has confirmed that at least seven to eight people, including the bus driver, were injured in the crash. Most of the injuries were minor, although the driver sustained the most serious injuries and was in serious condition.

New York firefighters tweeted on Friday night that there had been nine injuries in total, but in a statement they later said only eight people had been treated for injuries.

All the injured were transported to a hospital in the area.

Authorities said the operator of the MTA articulated bus may have suffered some sort of brake failure or did not navigate the turn properly.

The bus went over the rail to the ground below, where it was to be secured by the FDNY.

In an audio recording of FDNY obtained by ABC News, a dispatcher is heard saying, “Continue with the rescue. We have a tandem bus on the bridge, half is hanging from the bridge, there are people inside.”

The intersection is now closed and the bus is waiting to be towed.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
