Quick thoughts on a 79-58 win over Providence:
How did it happen: Indiana easily passed their first test of a major opponent in conference Monday afternoon at Harrah’s Cherokee Center, which turned out to be the hungriest and toughest team from the start. The Hoosiers set the tone early and led in double digits most of the afternoon. It was a balanced offensive performance as four Hoosiers scored in double digits as Indiana finished with 1.19 points per possession. The Hoosiers also scored 17 second chance points and 17 points behind in turnovers. The win puts the Hoosiers in a game on Tuesday against the No.17 from Texas, who narrowly beat Davidson in the Maui Invitational opener on Monday afternoon.
Outstanding Interpreter: It was a career day for Race Thompson, a junior in a red shirt, who racked up 22 points and 13 rebounds and looked like the player who showed great promise coming out of high school. The Minnesota native had eight offensive rebounds and came to the free throw line 10 times. Thompson appears to have regained much of the athleticism that was lost as he struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and was explosive finishing at the rim. He also showed a nice touch on his jump into the midrange.
A statistic that stands out: Indiana managed to overcome an average shooting performance by taking care of the ball. The Hoosiers have made just nine turnovers for a 14 percent turnover percentage. The Hoosiers also had seven interceptions, four blocked shots and rebounded 41 percent of their missed shots.
