Quick thoughts on a 64-58 loss to Michigan State:
How did it happen: Indiana was aggressive from the start in East Lansing. Rob Phinisee, who has been inconsistent for most of the season, attacked the dribble and also splashed in the only 3 points of the first half for the Hoosiers. But in a game both teams needed to get for NCAA tournaments, it was an offensive fight. Indiana and Michigan State combined for 13 turnovers and shot 16 of 51 from the field. There were 19 fouls called in the first half. At halftime, the two teams had collected just 26 points each with 0.81 points per possession.
The fouls continued to accumulate at the start of the second half. At the Under-16 media timeout, the Hoosiers and Spartans were tied at 31, but eight fouls had already been called in the opening 4:04. Indiana got the bonus at 2:55 PM and Michigan State was just behind at 2:17 PM. Indiana opened up a five-point lead over a 3-point Phinisee at 12:46 p.m. ET. But the Spartans reduced the lead to three on the next possession on a Marcus Bingham handover dunk just before the Under-12 media time-out. Michigan State then regained the lead on back-to-back buckets from Gabe Brown, which gave the Spartans a 42-39 lead. The offensive flow accelerated ahead of the under-eight media wait time as teams traded buckets on several back-to-back possessions. At 6:47, Michigan State was leading 48-47 on a shot from Joey Hauser.
Michigan State was leading 53-51 on the last media timeout after a jump and bucket from Henry, who had 18 points in the second half. The Spartans increased the lead to four at 56-52 on a 3-point Henry, then got a steal from Henry and called a time out with 1:31 left. Henry scored again with 1:15 to go to give Michigan State a six-point lead. Indiana did not challenge the rest of the course and gave up their fourth straight fight.
Outstanding Interpreter: Phinisee didn’t shoot well, but filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 34 minutes.
Statistics that stand out: It was another dominant performance for Henry, who finished with 22 points. Henry scored 12 points in the 4:34 final of the game.
