Quick thoughts on a 74-63 loss to Rutgers:
How did it happen: In desperate need of a victory, Indiana delivered a dud Wednesday night at Piscataway. The Hoosiers started strong and led 23-8 in the first half and had the opportunity to stretch it to 17 when Khristian Lander took a close-range look at the rim. Lander, however, missed it and Geo Baker hit a 3 point on the other end to make it a 12 point game. The Scarlet Knights’ 3 was their first of seven for the remainder of the half as Rutgers cleared the 15-point cushion and entered halftime with a four-point lead. Rutgers started the game 0 of 7 of 3, but knocked down seven of his last eight attempts from a distance in the first half.
The momentum Rutgers created in the first half spread to the second. Archie Miller had to use a quick timeout as the Scarlet Knights extended the lead to seven at 40-33 with 18:49 remaining. The Hoosiers never made it within six hours of the ride as Rutgers extended the lead to 20 at the 5:49 mark. At various points in the second half, it looks like the Hoosiers have given in for the first time this season. There was no fight. The loss, Indiana’s ninth in the conference game, further hurt the program’s hopes for an NCAA tournament berth in a season where it was the base expectation.
Outstanding Interpreter: Trayce Jackson-Davis scored a team-high 21 points and Al Durham Jr. added 20 points in the loss.
