Jase Febres once swore he would never wear a ponytail after his uncomfortable performance in Kansas earlier this season. But the Texas goalkeeper tightened his hair on Saturday and will never be able to go back.

Febres scored eight points at three career points for a career-high 26 points while Texas escaped from the state of Iowa during a Big 12 match in end of season.

The Longhorns (16-13, 8-8 Big 12) had a well deserved boost in their NCAA tournament hopes and erased memories of their 19-point lead last Wednesday at Baylor.

The Cyclones (20-9, 9-7) were without big man suspended Cameron Lard. Talented scorer Nick Weiler-Babb also suffered ankle injury in the first half and struggled the rest of the day.

Texas will enjoy all the possible benefits at the moment. But the Horns did not need too much as Febres, Courtney Ramey (18 points) and Elijah Mitrou-Long (13 points). Dylan Osetkowski also racked up 13 points and five rebounds in his first game after being out Wednesday due to an illness.

It was the second time in a row that the UT had scored 15 shots at 3-on-15 and was at a point of the 16-yard mark set against the Grand Canyon earlier this year. This is the highest number of assists that the Horn have brought in the four seasons of coach Shaka Smart at UT.

GAME BALL

Offensively, Febres does only one thing: shoot at 3 points. When it's on, it's pretty impressive. When that is not the case, the 6-foot-5 guard offers little else. But teams must always respect it anyway. Febres has now hit at least five three points in three straight games. He had four in the first period against Iowa State and tied a fifth to open the second. The most important game of the game could have happened when he simulated a 3-pointer, took two steps and hit a 17-foot foot.

HORNS UP

For about three minutes, Mitrou-Long was channeled his inner T.J. First, he swayed a 3-pointer from the right wing to break a 23-23 tie. In the next possession, Mitrou-Long made his way inside and found Ramey for easy layering. Then, Mitrou-Long was in the right place at the right time to rip the ball for a flight, then he moved in the other direction and throws a lob pass to Jaxson Hayes for a dunk. All this was part of a 12-0 run that gave the Horns a 12-point lead.

CORNES BELOW

Texas, who started the day with the Big 12's fourth-best defense, played a pretty awful defense in the first 12 minutes. Of the first 16 points in the Iowa State, 14 went to painting. A particular game is demarcated. Talen Horton-Tucker missed a pointer to 3, and George Conditt IV got his hands on the rebound while he was sandwiched between two Horns. Conditt scored with ease.

IN THE SCORE OF THE BOX

The cyclones also had a rebound start 12-8. Three days after the offensive rebounds, the Longhorns lost their chances of winning at Waco against Baylor. At halftime, the state of Iowa had an advantage of over five on the glass. Michael Jacobson and Lindell Wigginton of Iowa State each had four. Meanwhile, Hayes only had two rebounds in 17 minutes in the first half. Osetkowski had three, just like Kamaka Hepa before the break.

WHO IS NEXT?

If anyone saw Texas Tech's recent win over Kansas, then the Red Raiders defense was lapping up. Tech won 91-62. But in the next game, Tech battled Oklahoma State and needed extra time to win a 84-80 win. Tech played at the TCU on Saturday, but will host Texas on Monday in the final game of the regular season season. Longhorns.
