The Atelier series has been around for years, but it seemed to reach a wider audience with Atelier Ryza. It’s a very handcrafted JRPG with extremely animated character designs, and its sequel, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & The Secret Fairy, is out now.
I tried Ryza 1 last year, and it’s really heavy – and lovely, with it. This game was set in a small village and spent a lot of time building up its core of friends. It’s also anime like Damn however, and I got away from it pretty quickly. Bigger JRPG fans than me enjoyed it a lot, as in Steven Wright’s review for us:
Overall, I don’t think Atelier Ryza is the kind of game that’s going to change your mind much. While it ended up surprising me, I would say I’m the primary audience for it: a longtime JRPG fan who enjoys playing games with light simulation mechanics. If you can look past its obvious pacing issues – and some of its more free-to-play character designs – Atelier Ryza is a solid slice of JRPG comfort food that goes smoothly and might leave you asking for more. If you are part of this group – and you probably know if you are one of them – you will have a really good experience.
Ryza 2 continues the story three years after the events of the first game, “and depicts the reunion of Ryza and his friends.” There are turn-based combat, grappling hook exploration, workshop interior decorating, and inconvenient asymmetrical costume designs. I’ll ask Ed to see him again.
Atelier Ryza 2 is now available on Steam, where it costs £ 50 / € 60 / $ 60.
