ATF agent shot dead while trying to take man into custody

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WTVF) – An AFT special agent was seriously injured in a shooting at Murfreesboro Pike on Tuesday afternoon. Metro police said the suspect, who had also been shot, died.

Police identified the suspect as Corey Wellman, 40, of Nashville.

The officer was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment for his injuries.

Metro police said law enforcement was attempting to take Wellman into custody in the parking lot near the Country Cafe when shots were fired. MNPD spokesman Don Aaron said a number of law enforcement officials were affected.

Wellman was under investigation for possession of heroin with the intention of distributing it. An arrest warrant was issued for him last week.

No MNPD officer was injured. Aaron said no MNPD officer fired.

The FBI will investigate the shooting.

Part of Murfreesboro Pike was shut down during the investigation. The police are trying to reopen some lanes as soon as possible.
