PHOENIX – Adam Duvall passed teammate Austin Riley as he ran for goals after going over the wall in left center, costing the Atlanta Braves their 38th homerun of the season.
Duvall was ultimately credited with a two-run single in the bizarre first inning Wednesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It happened because Riley thought the ball had been caught.
With runners in the first and third row and one out, Duvall hit a fly ball deep on Merrill Kelly. Arizona center fielder Jake McCarthy jumped close to the wall and the ball deflected from his glove and landed in the first row of seats.
Riley, thinking McCarthy had the ball in his glove, retired at first as Duvall passed him between first and second. Duvall was sent off in second place on what is known as the “runner’s fielder pick”. Freddie Freeman and Riley have scored on the play to give Duvall 109 RBIs this season, which leads the National League.
