Atlanta Metro Celebrates "Weed Day" Despite Marijuana Ban For Recreation Purposes

This goes back almost 50 years, when five Californian teenagers met after school to smoke marijuana. Since then, April 20 has become a day of cannabis celebration around the world, including in the Atlanta subway.

Call it "Weed Day" or simply "420". Do not call the police: Marijuana for recreational purposes is not legal in Georgia.

But a few days after the city of Atlanta proposed new legislation banning smoking – including e-cigarettes and e-cigarettes – at the airport, in restaurants and bars, marijuana is not a party in smoke.

"I do not see that it would affect my business," said Clayton West, owner of East Atlanta Smoke and Vape, at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

West opened his first store five years ago on Glenwood Avenue and has just opened a second store on Moreland Avenue. Although smoking and vaping accessories are available, the West, from Georgia, says the glass artist's collection makes its stores different from others. Unique pieces, hand-blown by local and world-renowned artists are available, presented almost as museum pieces. In this art gallery, it's easy to miss the fact that the works have everything to do with smoking. There is much more than pipes, said West.

"My goal is to offer visitors a place where they can see something they have never seen before," he said. "I wanted to draw more attention to the culture of glassblowing and to local and Southeast artists."

On Saturday, West's new boutique will open from 11am to 5pm. and will feature live music, food, narghile and gifts at 4:20 pm.

"We thought what day was appropriate," said West.

Several other events are also organized for those wishing to honor the grass, including concerts, comedy shows and parties.

A Gwinnett County tobacco shop, Smoke and Toke, in Lawrenceville, boasts of being the location of the largest 420 party in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Food, beverages and discounts will be available, including some items priced at $ 4.20, from 10:00 to 23:00.

In Cobb County, the Cloud 9 Smoke and Vape headquarters in Kennesaw will host a glass-blowing demonstration starting at 2 pm. at 20 hours

Also on Saturday, a neighborhood party called "Heet in the Street" is planned for Little Five Points, according to an online advertisement.

"This is not an event where we will be distributing marijuana, but it is a free event for adult adults!", Indicates the description of the event.

In Georgia, only marijuana use for medical purposes is legal, and even that is a recent change. On Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill to develop and sell marijuana for medical purposes, offering patients already licensed to use the drug a way to buy it.

More than half of Georgians support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes, according to Peachtree NORML, the national chapter of a national pro-cannabis group.

"We are advocating for adult freedom in the United States to make their own cannabis decisions," said Tom McCain, executive director of the state group. "It's not the dangerous thing that means" Reefer Madness "and all the hype that characterizes it."

The cities of Atlanta and South Fulton, as well as unincorporated Fulton County, have passed orders decriminalizing marijuana. Fines inflicted in these areas were drastically reduced for those who were in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

"Weed Day" or not, Atlanta Metro Police Services said their work was not changing.

"No matter the day, we will continue to apply state law and county ordinances with respect to marijuana," said Cape Town. Michèle Pihera said.
