Emotions were at their culminating point as a ripping derby in North London rushed into its last quarter when Unai Emery – his Arsenal team leading 2-1 – decided to make a move. It was not a universally popular one. Alexandre Lacazette, excellent, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Home support sections have mocked the switch.
Emery would be justified. The idea was to give Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a central role and, four minutes later, he went behind Jan Vertonghen to touch Matteo Guendouzi's nice ball.
Arsenal scored two goals in the first half at Tottenham and, on the defensive side, it was a performance their fans saw through their fingers. But Emery's adventurous spirit was dominant. Her team swept over every opportunity and earned the point for what she did in the last third. On this proof, they will be a striking watch this season.
The Spurs would probably have already signed the draw, given the uncertainty that has threatened them behind the scenes in recent weeks and how they defeated their home in Newcastle last weekend. They would not have done it when Harry Kane led them 2-0 over the penalty point, to take advantage of the advantage that Christian Eriksen offered them, who now has every chance to stay at the club after Be agitated and wait for his departure for Spain. But the Spurs were not able to keep Arsenal away, Lacazette having started the fight with a goal scored in stoppage time in the first half.
The atmosphere prevailed everywhere, Arsenal bringing intensity early in the race, but the Spurs took control of their first push forward. Sokratis Papastathopoulos made the decision to challenge his head halfway with teammate Granit Xhaka. Kane and Arsenal were in trouble from the moment Kane won.
Papastathopoulos was out of position and from there it was too easy for the Spurs. His Heung-min played in Erik Lamela and, although his low shot for the far corner lacked power, Bernd Leno could only congratulate him. Eriksen arrived home – the easiest finish you could imagine – and Emery turned on his heel with anguish. It was so sweet on Leno's part but it was only the last mistake.
Pochettino had stirred his bag to respond to a selection crisis in his right back. Nobody could remember that Davinson Sánchez had played in that position and that meant that Pochettino could call Vertonghen back to the center of the defense. The high-level recall was Eriksen and he stole wisely.
The Spurs were shaking with threat during the break, especially in the first half, playing in the gaps between the lines and leaving Son's pace a lingering threat. Arsenal flinched. Witness David Luiz's decision to flee the son in advance to cover the center in a counter-attack in the first half. His ended up making an excellent stop for Leno, who went from ridiculous to sublime. He managed to escape a Kane shot 36 minutes later. Shortly after, he let slip a free kick Eriksen.
Arsenal made mistakes, none more obvious than Xhaka's crazy carelessness to Son in the box in the 39th minute. It was so late that many spectators had followed the room until the next action. That Kane converts the trouble into a stone wall has never been in doubt.
Arsenal came back to give hope after a tumultuous first half. After Nicolas Pepe made a small arrest to Hugo Lloris, the Arsenal winger fed Lacazette, who left Vertonghen to return home. The goal surely saved Arsenal from the audience. Pepe was a bright spot in the first half, as Emery threw him for the first time alongside Lacazette and Aubameyang. He had had the bad luck earlier to see a head blocked by Danny Rose.
The tempo remained breathless after the interval; the value of entertainment peaked and subsequent goals were seen as a certainty. The arsenal was open; they could not suppress her but they focused their efforts on the floods. Guendouzi forced Lloris to make another stop and, from the opposite corner, Sead Kolasinac failed to make a decisive move to hit Lacazette. On the other end, Leno saved well from Son and Kane shook the second post.
Emery made his changes and Arsenal attacked with irrepressible zeal. A substitute, Dani Ceballos, extended Lloris from afar before Aubameyang plundered the tying goal. Arsenal was invited to exercise an almost suffocating press. The Spurs could not go out and only one team looked to score again.
Xhaka was working Lloris from a distance and Arsenal thought he had found the winner when Papastathopoulos grouped home, but the crosser, Kolasinac, was offside. It was as close as they would come.
