Saturday’s game between Auburn and Mississippi State has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests and the subsequent quarantine of individuals in the Bulldogs’ program.
The SEC has announced that the game is tentatively postponed to December 12.
Shortly before the league announcement, Illustrated sportsof Ross Dellenger reported The state of Mississippi was battling an outbreak of COVID-19 and planned to temporarily shut down all football activities.
The news comes amid a COVID crisis surrounding the SEC. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher announced that the Aggies will not be training on Monday due to several positive COVID-19 tests within the program. The team found out on Sunday that two people – a player and a hardworking student – who had traveled with the team for their win over South Carolina on Saturday had tested positive. Texas A&M will meet virtually on Monday as it quarantines players and conducts contact tracing procedures.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron said the Tigers were facing an outbreak of COVID-19, with some players testing positive and others in quarantine. Orgeron did not confirm the number of players affected, but said several starters were included in the squad. The Tigers are still preparing for Saturday’s game against Alabama, but the game could be in jeopardy. LSU already has a catch-up game with Florida scheduled for December 12.
Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman is the latest SEC coach to test positive for COVID-19. Pittman was tested on Sunday as part of the team’s standard protocol and informed of his positive result on Monday. Pittman is asymptomatic and is in segregation at home, according to the school statement.
The SEC isn’t the only conference tackling COVID-19 issues. The Pac-12 opened their season last weekend with Utah vs. Arizona and Washington vs. California canceled due to the Utes and Golden Bears lacking the minimum number of stock players available for games. The issue was caused by positive cases of COVID-19 and additional players isolated under contact tracing protocols in both programs. The Pac-12 declared both games without competition. In the meantime, Stanford has played its first game against Oregon without starting quarterback David Mills and two other players due to viral protocols.
Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday the program “barely” had a full squad and was planning walk-ons to play UCLA this weekend.
The Bears face a possible cancellation of their next game against Arizona State due to strict health protocols in the city of Berkeley, according to The Mercury News. The team reportedly had a positive defensive lineman test for the virus, but Berkeley health officials said they have placed the entire position group in quarantine for two weeks. Without a defensive line, the Bears couldn’t play in Washington.
