Bo Nix debuted in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night, as rookie quarterback led No. 16 Auburn to an incredible victory over No. 11 Oregon. The Tigers beat the Ducks 27-21 after lagging most of the game, including a 21-6 deficit with five minutes left in the third quarter.
Although Nix was not very good overall and made a lot of mistakes, he played the parts that mattered late. Nix rolled to his left and kept the ball in a crucial 4-and 3 to pick up the first. A few games later, he converted a play to ten and ten before hitting Seth Williams for a 26-yard touchdown pass to give Auburn his first lead nine seconds from the end.
The win saved a tough day for the SEC, which lost the conference against teams like Memphis, Georgia State, North Carolina and Wyoming. They won the biggest game of the weekend, and that's a good start for Auburn and a devastating loss for the Ducks.
Here are five recipes of a thriller in Jerry World.
1. Auburn still has the horseshoe late. I do not know what it is at Auburn, but you do not want to be caught in a tight game with the Tigers in the fourth quarter. In a certain way, in a certain way, the Tigers just have a knack for seeming to have lost most of the match and having everything put in place in the last minutes to win a victory.
By watching almost all this game, you've never had the feeling that Auburn deserved to win. It seemed like Oregon should have won more than it was, no sequence reflecting it better than the first quarter. It was then that Justin Herbert found a Bryan Addison open in the bottom of the end zone and hit him with a perfect pass. A passage that Addison let go of his shoulder for an incompleteness. The Ducks were already 7-0 and missed a 14-0 chance. Then, to make matters worse, they missed a goal.
Of course, while Oregon missed out on all odds (it only managed 21 points out of five in the red zone), Auburn too. The Tigers also stumbled in the red zone (17 points in five trips), but the defense struggled to clear, but the defense recovered from a slow start. The Ducks offense was 176 yards in the first quarter and only 156 in the last three quarters. After two touchdowns and a missed placement on their first three possessions, the Ducks could only handle one touchdown in their last 11 possessions. These struggles have allowed Auburn to hang around and steal this late, but it's more fun to pretend that the Tigers are magical, so we'll do it.
2. Bo Nix could be good, but he's still a freshman. The last line of statistics from Nix was not pretty. He completed only 13 out of 31 passes for a total of 177 yards. Although he had two touchdowns, he also launched two interceptions. He also ran for 42 yards, but it's those interceptions that Auburn will likely have to keep working.
Making the transition between high school and the SEC would be difficult for a freshman, but it's harder when you're quarterback, and there will be obstacles on the road for Nix. Nevertheless, the way he finished the game is a somewhat encouraging sign for his future on The Plains.
3. The offensive line of Oregon is excellent, but it's not yet awesome. I was very interested in watching the game between the offensive line of Oregon and the Auburn defensive line. The Ducks did well, but were not great. The good news is that it allowed Justin Herbert to stay upright. Auburn had three sacks and six tackles for the loss, but given the talent of the seven Auburn players, it's not a shameful performance.
The problem was that Oregon could not do much in running, and that is the identity that Mario Cristobal is trying to build. It's a job that still needs work since the Ducks averaged only 3.7 yards per race on Saturday night, if the bag is removed. The good news is that Oregon will not encounter many other defensive lines like this one.
4. Justin Herbert has the chance to be special. Herbert finished with 242 yards and a touchdown (and this one dropped), so it was not the best performance we've seen, but some of the throws he's made have been exceptional. The touchdown he threw at Spencer Webb in the first quarter was fantastic, he rolled left, both feet planted, and shot a ball in the battlefield while being hit. It was the kind of throwing that most coaches would lose years watching sideways, but it was also a throw that very few QBs could perform, including Herbert's.
5. It does not destroy the chances of the Pac-12 in series. We have talked so much about this game as a must win for the Pac-12, and a win for Oregon would have been pretty nice! Yet, this is not the end of the world. Oregon can still reach the playoffs if he wins and wins the Pac-12 crown, because unless things go wrong, a 27-21 loss will not crush his resume.
Plus, no conference is built on a game. If they were, we would have to discuss the SEC 's difficulties after Saturday' s day.
There is a lot of football to play here from the playoffs of college football. Maybe we can play before making hasty conclusions.
