In the United States, video game consumer spending declined in August over the previous year, according to the industry's tracking firm, The NPD Group. Here are the complete results in all the main categories related to the game:

"In August 2019, hardware, software, accessories, and video game card expenses were $ 666 million, down 18% from last year," said the company. NDP analyst Mat Piscatella. "Decreases were recorded in all categories."
The poor performance of August led to a decline throughout the year.
"Cumulative spending on hardware, software, accessories, and video game video card tracking has dropped 6 percent from 2018 to $ 7 billion," said Piscatella. "Decreases in hardware expenses offset slight growth in software sales."

Software
NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but also obtains digital data directly from publishers. But not all companies participate. For example, Nintendo does not share sales with third parties, and Activision Blizzard does not sell on Battle.net.

You can probably deduce from the list above that August was not great for software sales. Minecraft, a 10-year old game, was the second bestseller of the month. And in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V was No. 3. In August, no new version was released unless Madden was counted, which was started technically during the NPD follow-up in July.
And NDP confirmed that it was the worst month of August in terms of software sales for over 20 years.
"Dollar sales of video game software tracked dropped 22% in August from a year ago, to $ 257 million," said Piscatella. "This represents the lowest total software sales in August, since August 1998, with $ 234 million."
Overall, 2019 is still tied with last year's software sales, but this is mainly due to the most recent of the top three console platforms.
"Dollar sales of video game software tracked reached $ 3.1 billion, up 1%," said Piscatella. "The performance of Nintendo Switch has been the engine of growth."
Madden NFL 20
"Madden NFL 20 was rehearsed as the best-selling video game of the month," said Piscatella. "This is the seventh year in a row that a Madden NFL game is the best seller of the month of August. Madden NFL 20 is currently the third best-selling game of 2019. "
