As previously mentioned, the August list still doesn’t include any Xbox Series X / S games, which could indicate that Microsoft has no plans to add any titles from its latest consoles to Games with Gold, at least. for the moment.

While the positive reception of the Free Games with Gold in August may mean that Microsoft is finally listening to reviews, it’s still too early to tell if the company is really committed to picking better games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. However, it should be remembered that in February 2021 Microsoft was also praised for the Xbox Games with Gold list released this month. Apart from famous games such as Resident Evil Remaster HD, the company also included an optimized version for Xbox Series X / S of Gears of war 5.
Unfortunately, the months that followed saw Microsoft revert to its old niche game release model for Xbox Games with Gold and nothing for next-gen consoles. Many believe the only reason the company increased its list for February is to appease disgruntled fans after Microsoft tried to increase the price of the Xbox Live Gold subscription. For now, it remains to be seen whether the pattern established this month will continue throughout the year. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if next month’s roster disappointed again, especially since Microsoft isn’t particularly hiding the fact that its priority is Xbox Game Pass and not Xbox Live.
In the end, as Microsoft invests its resources in Xbox Game Pass, that shouldn’t mean giving up Xbox Live Gold altogether. On the contrary, by offering older but popular games with Gold, the company has the opportunity to differentiate the value of Xbox Live Gold with Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Live Gold could be the place for gamers to relive old classics for free, while Xbox Game Pass could be the service offering the biggest and latest Xbox games.
