AURORA, Colorado (AP) – A Colorado city is planning to force detention center staff to quickly notify health officials of outbreaks of infectious diseases.

Aurora City Council members gave their preliminary agreement on Thursday to require this notification within 48 hours of their discovery.

The proposal follows a wave of outbreaks of chickenpox and mumps in a private federal immigration detention center and operated in Aurora.

The facility recorded 15 cases of mumps and nine cases of chickenpox from the beginning of 2019 to mid-March.

Institutional leaders set up a post-epidemic vaccination program.

The proposed report would apply to three other facilities if approved by the full City Council.
