JUST 12 hours after he proposed to the love of his life, the dreams of Michael Owen and fiance Rosie Rechichi of a happy future together were in tatters.
When Michael, a 23-year-old healthy and fit young man, developed a cold and sore neck, Ms. Rechichi convinced her to see a doctor
The diagnosis was devastating: acute myeloid leukemia Peter Owens, Michael's father, said that there was no sign that he was seriously ill.
"We do not know how long he had it, because there was no sign," he said.
"And I still do not know why, I do not know how you catch it."
Over the next 48 hours, Michael's health deteriorated faster than anyone would have ever imagined.
As cancer filled his lungs, he could barely breathe.
Given the option of being put on a respirator for 48 hours to rest before starting chemotherapy, Michael said yes.
"I panicked and I said," Are you sure? ", And basically the last thing he said" Yeah, it's better than that. " dying, "said Ms. Rechichi
But Michael never woke up He was declared a brain dead for lack of oxygen
" His close friends had come in the evening … they let them all come in, so that they could say goodbye and do things, "said Mr. Owens.
Ms. Rechichi says that she was grateful for the time she had spent with Michael.
"I have the impression that he has entered my life for a reason and I feel good knowing that he left this world knowing how much I loved him, enough to marry him, "she said.
Ms. Rechichi and Michael's family are now raising money for acute myeloid leukemia research and are encouraging others to have regular blood tests.
"Just something so small could change so much – if he had just had a blood test maybe a few months ago, maybe that would never have happened," said Ms. Rechichi. .
