Tencent plans to release its competitor WeGame worldwide

Chinese video gaming giant Tencent plans to launch its PC gaming platform around the world.

According to the South China Morning Post, Tencent announced last Friday the creation of a global version of WeGame in Hong Kong. The platform was launched for the first time in September of last year, replacing the Tencent Games platform.

"The Hong Kong version of WeGame is under development," said a spokesman for Tencent. "This release will be available to foreign users, and we will use this platform to bring more Chinese games to the global market."

WeGame is considered the largest PC gaming distribution platform in China. offering more than 200 games with a mix of Chinese and international titles. The plan is now to greatly expand the platform with a global version.

Being based in Hong Kong, Tencent will also be able to avoid the strict governmental restriction of China and to reach more players accordingly.

to start competing with the recently announced Chinese Steam customer, but its upcoming global launch will put it in direct competition outside of China as well. Neither Steam China nor the global version of WeGame have yet launch date.

Tencent has invested in a variety of high-end gaming studios and recently signed a strategic partnership agreement with Ubisoft to expand its presence in China.
