A two-year N-ICE trial in Wollongong, Geelong, and Melbourne is led by the National Research Institute of Drugs at Curtin University in Western Australia.
The trial, which is funded by the federal government's National Medical and Medical Research Council, is investigating whether n-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, can reduce ice cravings and help addicts quit smoking
Rebecca McKetin, of the Institute, says that changes in glutamine in the brain are at the root of the addiction. "NAC helps reduce appetite by restoring the balance of chemical substances involved in appetite and drug research." Monash, Deakin and La Trobe Universities, University of Wollongong, Newcastle University and the Burnet Institute are more manageable for their patients, "says Associate Professor McKetin
.
Dr. Olivia Dean, of Deakin, said that He hoped that the NAC would not only help people stop or reduce their ice consumption, but that it would also reduce users' mood swings
. Wollongong University, expressed hope that "the NAC could break the cycle of addiction and help people stop using ice."
