The two biggest players of their generation clashed this weekend with Denzel Washington's Equalizer 2 and Meryl Streep Mamma Mia! Here we return . While Meryl (with the help of Cher) narrowly lost Denzel at the box office, both films can come out very satisfied.
Equalizer 2 did not do very well with the critics (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience gave him an A-Cinemascore, largely on the strength – I suspect – of the presence of Denzel. The first film won $ 100 million in the United States and 190 million worldwide, and Equalizer 2 should see similar results, so the gambit has clearly paid off for the double Oscar. As is the case with most of Denzel's films, it all depends on his drawing power at the box office. His films do not need a lot of frills, superheroes or co-stars. People come for Denzel.

Ten years after the original Mamma Mia stormed a domestic box office of 145 million dollars and a huge 609 million dollars in the world, Here We Go Again returned with a strong opening of 34.4 million dollars, by winning the opening weekend of the original $ 7 million. Although she did not really figure in the sequel, Streep was definitely a big selling point, with Cher and contagious ABBA music, who apparently have enough success to support two musicals. The critics for the film were favorable (78% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the audience loved it, giving it an A-on Cinemascore. It's a powerful combination, so expect Here We Go Again as its predecessor, to hang out in the top 10 for weeks.
