A powerful explosion that killed 23 people in Kabul this weekend, including an AFP driver, was the latest in a series of bloody attacks in the Afghan capital this year .
The attacks were claimed either by the Taliban, which launched an insurgency 17 years ago, or the rival Islamic State group that emerged in the war-torn country in 2014.
Here a recap of some of the city's most devastating attacks this year:
January
Jan. 4: A suicide bomber blew himself up near a crowd of police and protesters, killing at least 13 people – all police officers. March 21: While Afghans celebrate the Persian New Year holidays, a suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowd: 33 people were killed, most of them teenagers, and 65 wounded civilians.
