The sixth film in the Tom Cruise franchise ends a chapter, but opens a new door.

There is a moment in Mission: Impossible – Fallout after a particularly nice twist, in which the IMF secretary Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) says, "I'm starting to see why guys like it so much." He addresses his field agents, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) But Hunley acknowledges that Mission: Impossible 's films are still as successful after more than 20 years at the box office: they are fun.
Each episode offers thrills, laughter and intrigue. More than most long-time franchises, it's not particularly self-referential, rarely looking back, ensuring each slice can be solid. by herself. Fallout changes this not only by looking backwards, but by using the past to forge something new. In many ways, Fallout feels like the end of one era and the beginning of something else.
Christopher McQuarrie, a writer and one-way director, does it through Vanessa Kirby's White Widow. who, in a startling revelation, turns out to be the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave's Max from the 1996 film that started everything; she even looks a little like a young Redgrave.
The fact that Ethan works with this link to the past is a recognition of the pbadage of time, while tying the first six films in a tidy bow. This kind of construction of the universe is something that the franchise James Bond did not understand with Specter . Trying to follow the trend of cinematic universes, he brought the clbadic villain Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), hoping that the presence of such an iconic character would be enough to justify the tenuous explanation that all of Daniel Craig's films were connected via the machinations of a villain. He fell flat because it was not organic; he was not familiar with the reality established since Craig's first Bond movie, Casino Royale .
But the reminder of Brian De Palma's mission via the Kirby character works, because there is a sense of familiarity there. We enjoyed the spread between Cruise and Redgrave at the time. And now, we're enjoying the reunion between Cruise and Redgrave's film girl, with characters reflecting the ages and personalities of Cruise and Redgrave in the mid-1990s. Max was a veteran and cynical weapons dealer while Ethan was a young and brilliant IMF official. Today, Hunt has seen shit and is a seasoned veteran, while White Widow is a doe-eyed criminal.
A Major Theme of Mission: Impossible – Fallout demolishes the old world order, the major ambition of Syndicate founder Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) and his followers (called "The apostles"). His plan is simple: contaminate a major water source for one third of the world's population by detonating two nuclear devices. The idea is to create terrible suffering so that there is great peace. But that's not enough, he also wants Ethan Hunt to suffer and, therefore, puts his wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan) in the middle of the blast zone.
The character of Monaghan is a common thread since the end of J.J. The mission of Abrams : Impossible III . She was supposed to be Ethan's exit strategy from the spying game, but he continued to get carried away, to the point where they had to simulate his death so as not to be in danger with Hunt's many enemies. She had a small cameo at the end of Ghost Protocol but pretty much nothing to do before Fallout that ultimately solves her complicated relationship with Ethan, allowing both characters (and the franchise )
When Ethan and his team arrive at the place where Lane plans to blow up the bombs, they discover that it is a medical camp for smallpox in the Kashmir region. Julia works at the camp as a nurse (via Lane's machinations), but that's not the most shocking thing about her appearance. As we learn, she 's since remarried with a doctor, played by Wes Bentley. Of course, this information comes as a shock to the public.
In the end, however, it is clear that Ethan is not supposed to be with Julia, but with the MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). We returned to a conversation that Luther had with Ilsa earlier in the film, where he explains that Ethan and Julia could not be together because the world needed him more than ever. But if Ethan can have a relationship with his spies, he does not need to compromise on matters of the heart.
For most Rogue Nation Ilsa was portrayed as an impressive femme fatale. a link with Ethan who was not yet fully explored. Fallout ends with Isla murmuring something in Julia's ear ( Lost in Translation style) and finally getting permission from Julia to be with Ethan. This opens up intriguing possibilities for the series Mission: Impossible that could now follow the exploits of the pair of super-spies Hunt and Faust.
After once again preventing another global catastrophe, Ethan is invited by his teammates how far away from the wire they cut it this time. His answer is short, but self-aware; a wink at the fans who stayed for the wild ride up to this point: "the usual". Fallout concludes a chapter on the series, the chapter on Ethan Hunt as one-man, world-saving show. He now has someone in his life to bear the burden he carries for six films. Solomon Lane may not have upset the Old World as he had planned, but he certainly helped to achieve the impossible: to breathe new life and a new possibility into a cinematic franchise of 20 years old
