At least 20 people have been injured when a crowded escalator collapsed at a train station in Rome.
Mobile phone footage of the incident shows dozens of people hurtling to the bottom and rushing to get out of the way. The cause was not immediately known.
Italian media said the incident involved visiting fans of the Russian football team CSKA Moscow, which faced Italian side Roma in a Champions League clash earlier today.
Witnesses say the football fans had been singing and jumping before the escalator gave way and footage shared on social media shows people piling up at the bottom.
People on the parallel escalator can be seen trying to grab those on the broken machine and pull them to safety.
The metropolitan station at Piazza Repubblica near the main Termini train station was closed by investigators. Firefighters said seven were in serious condition.
Pictures posted to social media by Italian firefighters show twisted metal from the broken escalator.
“The scene that we found was people piled up at the bottom of the escalator,” Rome provincial fire chief Giampietro Boscaino said.
“People one on the top of the other looking for help.
“They had various injuries caused by the escalator that was twisted, therefore serious injuries.”
