Football news: Julen Lopetegui’s father slams Real Madrid for selling Cristiano Ronaldo – Football

The humiliating 5-1 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona looks to have sealed the 52-year-old’s fate, with rumours circling that he will be replaced by Antonio Conte sooner rather than later.

Real currently sit ninth in La Liga having won just four of the first 10 matches scoring just 14 goals in that period.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Lopetegui’s father Joe Antonio insisted that Madrid set his son up to fail this season by selling Ronaldo to Juventus and not replacing him with an elite attacker.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was good,” said Jose Antonio. “Was he bady? We all have defects but it turns out he scored 50 goals a season. He is missing. You are missing a prominent goalscorer. They haven’t brought one, not a single one.

There was talk of Neymar and others, but no one came. They have stolen 50 goals from my son.”

Being sacked by Real will bring down the curtain on a miserable few months for Lopetegui, who was sensationally sacked as Spain coach on the eve of the World Cup, after agreeing to take charge at the Santiago Bernabeu without informing Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales.
